Cheat Sheet for using “You’re” and “Your”

One of the more common errors I see is writers confusing or simply misusing your and you’re so here is a quick ‘cheat sheet’ that was sent to me with thanks to the original (unknown) author.

Your cheat sheet

Using correct spelling and grammar is so important when communicating with clients and each other! 

When to Use How to Test
You’re When describing someone else Replace “you’re” with “you are”
Your When talking about ownership   of something Replace “your” with “my”

Examples:

You’re:

1. “You’re my best friend.” Test: “You are my best friend.” (Correct!)

2. “I like you’re backpack.” Test: “I like you are backpack.” (Incorrect.)

Your:

1. “Your hair is so cool.” Test: “My hair is so cool.” (Correct!)

2. “Your going to meet me at 6 p.m.” Test: “My going to meet me at 6 p.m.” (Incorrect.)
